Mrs Texas International 2012
Rachel Hedstrom

Mrs. Texas International, Rachel Hedstrom, is a grateful American and proud Texan whose mission is to honor our country’s veterans. She is a spokesperson for Honor Flight, a national non-profit whose mission is to acknowledge our veterans’ service by sending them on an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to reflect at the memorials built in their honor. Rachel is the daughter of a Vietnam veteran, granddaughter of two World War II veterans, and the great-great-granddaughter of a Civil War veteran, so service to country runs in her blood. She considers it her duty to use her voice to highlight the men and women who are the first to stand for freedom – and the last to ask for any sort of recognition or assistance.

As part of the Mrs. International system’s national alliance with the Go Red for Women Campaign from the American Heart Association, Rachel also promotes a heart-healthy lifestyle through this initiative designed to empower women to take charge of their heart health. As a child, Rachel was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a neuromuscular disorder that robbed her of her ability to walk.  Her recovery included learning how to use her nerve-damaged hands to twirl a baton, which started a life-long love of twirling that led her to become a feature twirler on both the high school and collegiate levels. Her passion for her hard-won physical fitness continues to this day, as she is a beginning runner fighting hard to continue her recovery.  This background gives her empathy for those struggling with a physical disability – particularly the kids she visits in local hospitals and in the community.

Rachel resides in Allen, Texas, with her husband, Eric, and her Sheltie, Morgan, and works as a public relations consultant and writer. She is a licensed pilot and enjoys racing her car in autocross events and at the track.  Rachel’s love of traveling, photography and new experiences leads Rachel and her husband to many far-flung places, camera in-hand, any chance they get.
