Mrs Texas International 2013
Michelle Berndt

“You have cancer” is a phrase that would halt most people in their tracks. But for Mrs. Texas International 2013 Michelle Berndt, those words inspired her to think bigger than herself, and to begin a reign as Mrs. Texas International that would inspire women all over Texas with her story.

As a fourth-generation breast cancer survivor, Michelle’s battle with cancer is something she shares to inspire others to understand the risks inherent in their own genetics. Her platform is “Spread the Pink,” inspiring young adults who may be unaware of their family medical history when it comes to cancer. Her mission is simple and her hope is strong -- that her own children, Grayce Lou, 6; and Tristan James, 3; may one day live in a cancer-free world.

Michelle’s personal battle with cancer was something she chose to share with the world as part of a groundbreaking documentary produced by Baylor Health Care System entitled “Dallas Hope,” available online at www.dallashope.com. She has told her story to countless groups, school children, advocacy groups, and in the media including appearances on “Good Morning Texas” on WFAA Channel 8, “The Broadcast” on KTXD, and on “Zazza & Julie” on KVIL FM. She is even featured on one of the biggest billboards in North Texas on I-35N! Michelle also serves as a spokesperson for Susan G. Komen and the American Cancer Society, and she volunteers as a special events coordinator for the Cancer Research Foundation of North Texas.

Michelle also advocates for a healthy lifestyle as a representative for the Go Red for Women movement, a partnership through the American Heart Association and the Mrs. International organization that allows all International titleholders to serve this worthy cause through an advocacy role. Though her reign keeps her schedule busy with appearances, Michelle makes time to keep herself healthy through diet and exercise, and understanding her own heart health. She enjoys spending time with her daughter and son, and with her husband, Dr. Stephen Berndt, with whom she lives in Mansfield, Texas. Michelle is a graduate of Wartburg College in Iowa with a double degree in Music Education/Music Therapy. She serves as director of Admissions for Kaplan College in Fort Worth.
